TPD Severity: A Smarter way to protect your clients

Take life on with confidence

Industry-wide, Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) claims have risen sharply in recent years. At Acenda, we recognise this has created challenges for both you and your clients. As the nature of work evolves, medical technology advances, and societal attitudes shift, we believe it’s time to critically reassess TPD cover, and develop insurance solutions for today’s modern workforce.

Introducing TPD Severity - built for today’s realities, this innovative option gives financial advisers a flexible wide range of choice and an affordable way to structure TPD protection.

Whether you’re creating strategies to provide the right level of protection for the right price, tailoring cover that fits their life stages, or helping clients manage rising premiums, TPD Severity offers a modern solution that blends seamlessly with existing TPD products.

What is TPD Severity?

TPD Severity is a new, flexible insurance option that complements our existing TPD cover by introducing objective medical benchmarks to assess claims - PIRS (Psychiatric Impairment Rating Scale) and WPI (Whole Person Impairment). TPD Severity allows clients to split their benefit between standard TPD cover (Own or Any Occupation) and TPD Severity, making premiums more affordable while still offering meaningful protection.

What are the features of TPD Severity?

Affordable

With TPD Severity, the sum insured your client needs is now within reach.

TPD Severity is an option that clients can take up that will make their cover more cost effective. If a client has affordability concerns about the amount of TPD Any/Own Occupation they require, they can allocate a portion of that cover to TPD Severity to reduce the overall premium amount.

Customisable

Mix and match Any Occupation, Own Occupation, and TPD Severity to shape cover that suits your clients’ needs and budgets.

Clients can individually structure their benefit amount, having varying proportions of the benefit amount across TPD Any / Own Occupation and TPD Severity that suits their personal protection circumstances and affordability.

Objective

Backed by medicine, built for fairness – TPD Severity relies on more objective medical scales to assess claims.

Once Maximum Medical Improvement has been reached, TPD Severity uses clinical benchmarks PIRS (Psychiatric Impairment Rating Scale) and WPI (Whole Person Impairment) to assess claims. Clients must receive a 30% or more WPI rating or greater than 30% PIRS rating for claims to be paid.
